Philodendron squamicaule (pink form)
A hemiepiphytic climbing philodendron native to the humid tropical forests of Panama, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Colombia — and one of the more immediately tactilely distinctive collector philodendrons available, built around a single defining feature that makes it recognizable the moment it is seen or touched. The species name squamicaule derives from the Latin for "scaly stem," a direct reference to the densely bristled, scale-like trichomes that cover the petioles in a way that gives them a furry, almost caterpillar-like texture unlike anything else in the genus. In the pink form specifically, those petioles are a vivid salmon to hot pink, a color so saturated against the large, elongated, dark glossy green arrow-shaped leaves that the petiole becomes the entire visual statement of the plant — the leaves themselves clean, deeply green, and handsomely architectural, but the eye drawn immediately and repeatedly to the extraordinary pink furry stems. New leaves emerge with a soft pink blush across the leaf surface before maturing to deep glossy green, adding a further transient color dimension to each new unfurling. A vigorous and fast-growing climber when given adequate humidity and vertical support.
-
Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the most intense pink petiole coloration — the pink saturation is significantly more vivid under good indirect light and fades under dim conditions. Avoid direct harsh sun which burns the foliage.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; prone to root rot if overwatered — excellent drainage is non-negotiable.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 68-85°F; high humidity of 60-80% is essential for healthy leaf development and the best petiole texture. A humidifier is strongly recommended.
-
Watering: Allow the top 20-30% of the medium to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Never waterlog — consistently moist but never saturated.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during active growth; consistent feeding supports vigorous climbing growth. Monthly in winter.
